We as humans are complicated. When we are not feeling well, or are "out of sorts", that suggests there is an imbalance somewhere.
How do you determine where the imbalance is? Let's have a look at the circle of wellness and ask ourselves some questions about these eight dimensions of wellness:
1- Emotional Wellness - Emotional wellness involves developing an awareness of your feelings. Are you controlling your feelings, or are your feelings controlling you?
2- Occupational Wellness - This dimension of well-being recognizes the importance of satisfaction, enrichment and meaning through work. Is your current work fulfilling and adding to your life, or are you doing soul-sucking work that creates fatigue and unhappiness?
3- Intellectual Wellness - Intellectual wellness encourages us to engage in creative and mentally-stimulating activities, and it requires lifelong learning and curiosity. Are you continuing to learn and grow as an individual?
4 - Environmental Wellness - Environmental wellness refers to leading a lifestyle that values the relationship between ourselves, our community and the environment. Are you creating an environment in your space that has a positive impact on your health and health of those in your family and community?
5 - Financial Wellness - Financial wellness involves successfully managing our resources to cover our life and our dreams. Do you currently have enough resources to cover your daily life and to put some aside for vacations or other goals?
6 - Social Wellness - Social wellness focuses on building and nurturing meaningful and supportive relationships with individuals, groups and communities. Do you have 1-2 close friends? Do you attend church or other groups where you experience support and positive interactions?
7 - Physical Wellness - Physical wellness recognizes that our daily habits, behaviours and the products we use and consume have an impact on our overall health, well-being and quality of life. Are you feeling well physically, or are there some things you could do to improve how healthy you feel?
8 - Spiritual Wellness - A healthy spirit and a connection to God helps us remain resilient and better prepared to face life’s challenges. Are you struggling with guilt or lack self-worth?
WHAT TO DO NEXT?
- Carefully examine each of the eight areas of wellness and, on a scale of 1 to 10, evaluate where you are in each area.
- Review your scores and, based on your lowest scores, prioritize which areas you want to focus on towards your wellness.
- Ask for help. If you are struggling with any of these wellness areas, you can visit a library to find books on the subject, take a class, join a support group, or consult an expert to assist you.
